My work, broadly speaking may well be traditional, in that the subject is often painted from life, and executed in oil. However the paint surface itself is as important to me as the subject depicted.

The paint is laid down using only a knife, applied as thickly as possible to most areas, and none in others allowing the primer to show through. I enjoy the contrast of this differing surface within a painting.
In the very thick passages, struggling for controle, is where the magic lies for me.
With half an eye on what is being depicted, and the other on the way in which thickly applied paint can produce unexpected effects almost abstract from the subject matter if isolated; it is in this space that the qualities of the very stuff of paint are most interesting to me.
My pursuit of paints visceral qualities and the subject matters natural beauty hopefully results in paintings that are both rich and exciting.
